The specialty of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering is considered one of the important and rare specializations in which medical and engineering specializations overlap together. It is one of the modern sciences that has witnessed rapid development in recent years.

The topic of prosthetic limbs and orthotics is closely related to clinical medicine and aims to provide prosthetic limbs and orthotics for people who suffer from limb amputations or who need orthotics by providing supportive devices for weak muscles and bones or those who suffer from neurological disorders, as well as for amputees. Therefore, we need to create a team in which the disabled person is the center of attention. The team is usually led by a rehabilitation specialist who works with specialists in limb engineering, artificial supports, physical medicine, physical therapy, and social therapy. The role of the specialist or engineer of prosthetics and orthotics is a major role, as he is the one who manufactures and adapts the limb or orthodontic device (brace) for people with temporary or permanent disabilities, and thus helps the patient to be independent and an active member of society.

Hence the interest in specializing in prosthetics and orthotics in Iraq in recent years. Perhaps the establishment of the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Karbala in coordination between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Health, the Supreme Committee for Limbs and Industrial Supports, and the International Committee of the Red Cross / Iraq branch is located in this The context in order to advance the reality of this important scientific and humanitarian aspect, especially since Iraq suffers from many of these humanitarian cases as a result of wars and abhorrent terrorism, as well as the necessity of advancing the reality of the productive academic aspect to serve society.

Since its establishment in the academic year 2014-2015, the Department Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering at the University of Karbala has been keen to keep pace with the needs of the country, especially the holy city of Karbala, which witnessed the opening of limb and support rehabilitation centers and a number of hospitals and health centers by providing energies and personnel that have experience and knowledge in the field of limb engineering and industrial supports. The first batch of students was accepted in the 2014-2015 academic year, and a number of party engineers graduated starting in the 2017-2018 academic year, distributed throughout the governorates of Iraq.
