A scientific conference on identifying the significance of the phenomena of natural earthquakes is being held at the University of Karbala and organized by the College of Engineering and the Department of Oil (Causes of earthquakes and seismic activity in Iraq).
The symposium covered topics such as how earthquakes occur, their causes, the dynamics of the movement of tectonic plates, the types of earthquakes, methods of measuring them, and their risks. The lecture was given by the geological expert Dr. Muthanna Shamari with the participation of researchers and specialists in the College of Engineering.
He also mentions a general overview of the earthquakes in Iraq, the most significant seismic regions in Iraq, the nearby seismic sources that influence and stimulate earthquakes in Iraq, the effect of dams on the depletion of Iraq’s water resources, and the injection of hydrocarbons and methods to stimulate earthquakes in the region.
The Dean of the College Prof. Dr. Laith Al-Qarawee, also emphasized the significance of these scientific and cultural endeavors in advancing the educational and developmental processes in our beloved nation.
