On Wednesday, 2/26/2025, the Department of Civil Engineering at the College of Engineering at the University of Karbala discussed a master’s thesis for the student Saja Qasim Abdul Hassan, entitled “Reducing Landfill Leachate Pollution on Surrounding Soil Using Innovative Treatment Layers”.

The study aimed to reduce pollutants in landfill leachate using advanced treatment techniques that include layers of geotextile and recycled materials such as PET and uPVC. Five experimental reactors were designed to simulate landfill conditions, where the results showed that using a PET treatment layer contributed to reducing pollutants and significantly improving the filtration quality, while uPVC helped accelerate the transition of stages and reduce the long-term landfill settling time.

These results reflected the importance of applying innovative treatment strategies to enhance environmental sustainability and achieve sustainable solutions to deal with landfill pollution.

The discussion committee consisted of the following lecturers:

• Professor Dr. Khaled Safaa Hashem, Chairman

• Assistant Professor Dr. Riyadh Jassim Muhammad, Member

• Assistant Professor Dr. Safaa Khadir Hashem, Member

• Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdul Razzaq Abdul Redha, Member and Supervisor

• Assistant Professor Dr. Mahdi Abbas Mahdi, Member and Supervisor
