Under the supervision of Chief Agricultural Engineer Prof. Jawad Kazem Ghalib, the agricultural unit at the College of Engineering continues its prominent role in preserving the university environment through several vital tasks that contribute to improving the environmental landscape within the campus. The unit’s duties include caring for the gardens at the employee housing and Fareeha sites, focusing on planting long-lived trees that are suitable for the prevailing climatic conditions in the country, including the trees’ ability to withstand high temperatures and elevated salinity, especially at the Fareeha site.
In addition, the unit is implementing several agricultural projects, such as establishing and planting new gardens and installing modern irrigation systems using sprinklers and drip irrigation, aimed at reducing water consumption and conserving water resources. A drainage system has also been established to eliminate excess salinity in the soil.
As part of the enhancement of the green environment, the agricultural unit is preparing to celebrate “National Tree Day” on March 12 each year, during which hundreds of long-lived trees and seasonal flowers will be planted across various college locations. This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to environmental sustainability goals and the necessity of enhancing green spaces in all university facilities.
