The Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr. Laith Shaker Rashid Al-Qarawi, gave a seminar entitled (Leadership and Innovation in using local materials to produce lightweight structural members).
Within the Global Entrepreneurship Week, and in the presence of the Scientific Assistant, Professor Dr. Mithaq Nimah Rahima, and several department heads, academic and technician staff members.
The seminar aims to use local rocks that are abundant in the areas of Najaf and Karbala in a way that is not used. This rock is crushed and burned, thus converting it into lightweight coarse aggregate that is used to pour lightweight concrete with acceptable mechanical properties compared to Iraqi and international standard specifications. This concrete is used in the production of various structural members. attapulgite and broken clay bricks were used in this study for comparison as lightweight coarse aggregate to produce lightweight sustainable structural concrete.
The seminar included a practical investigation of the behaviour of rectangular cross-section concrete slabs using lightweight aggregate concrete and regular-weight concrete reinforced with ordinary steel bar supported by a simple support. The results of the tests showed the possibility of using this type of lightweight concrete, in addition to its benefit in reducing the structural load by high percentages, which reduces the large construction costs and opens great horizons in this field.
