In the College of Engineering/Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, a discussion of a master’s thesis entitled (“Economic feasibility and optimal flow of the high-voltage direct current network and comparisons with the alternating current network”) by researcher Ali Hassan Kazem.
The study included the effect of introducing or injecting a high-pressure direct current line into the Iraqi national grid with a high voltage of 400 kV, and the effect of connecting a new power generation station to the existing network at the short circuit level in order to be a connection node in the national grid from northern to southern Iraq.
The thesis aims to introduce or inject a high-pressure direct current line into the main national grid with the ability to independently control the injection of active and passive energy into the line, low transmission power loss and high transmission capacity, as well as ease of use, a capacity factor close to 96%, and well-studied economic feasibility in the long term. Transforming the national grid into a regional network will facilitate the process of connecting electrical power networks in neighbouring countries.
The study recommended that high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology is one of the solutions used to enhance the stability, reliability, flexibility, and controllability of the energy system. According to the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, it is planned to establish a new power station by 2028 in the southern region with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts to support the generation capacity in the region. As well as the neighbouring regions, especially the central region. The central region is considered the load center of the Iraqi network. However; It does not have enough generation to meet its demand.
The thesis was approved by the discussion committee, which consisted of Professor Dr. Ali Jaafar Mahdi (Al-Zahra University / Chairman), Assistant Professor Dr. Marwa Muhammad Mara’i (University of Kerbala / Member), the teacher Dr. Ahmed Jabbar Muhammad (University of Kerbala / Member), and both Professor Dr. Ali Abdul Al-Razzaq Abbas Al-Tahir and the teacher, Dr. Yasser Falah Hassan Al-Khafaji (University of Kerbala/member and supervisor)
