The Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering, University of Karbala, in collaboration with the Community Police and the Human Rights Unit, organized a scientific and awareness seminar titled “Cyber Blackmail: Its Negative Effects and How to Raise Awareness Among University Students.”
The seminar targeted first-year students as well as a number of professors and administrative staff. It shed light on one of the most dangerous modern cybercrimes, particularly cyber blackmail, discussing its various types, methods, how to deal with it, and ways to avoid it.
The seminar was presented by Colonel Dr. Alaa Aziz, Lieutenant Hawraa Adel, and Officer Hamsa Jasem Mohammed. They were welcomed by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Haider Nazem Al-Muhanna, along with Dr. Doha Thamer Umeira and Assistant Dr. Alaa Abdul-Hamid. The seminar was introduced by Assistant Dr. Faylaq Fathi.
The speakers emphasized the critical role played by the Community Police in combating such crimes, highlighting their continuous efforts to identify sources of danger before they escalate and spread within society. They also addressed several questions from the attendees concerning mechanisms for handling and uncovering these crimes. The speakers stressed that building a safe and stable community begins with breaking the barrier of fear, facing challenges head-on, and strengthening trust in state institutions through early reporting, even of the slightest threats or attempts at blackmail.
